"This picture illustrates a predator-prey relationship I never imagined, let
alone saw illustrated before. Additionally, the photographer has captured
what must have been a fleeting moment in artistic fashion, with the sun
peeking over the cliff face just above the predator, while still showing the
critical details (prey in mouth) of the action. Exposure, focus, and
composition are all perfect – quite an accomplishment!

RUNNER UP: EDUARDO ACEVEDO
Merit of Excellence Award plus AUD 550 OG Expedition voucher for Raja Ampat, Cenderawasih Bay or Cuba

“The drama of an ocean giant captured at the moment of clapping its jaws
shut around a school of prey is intensified when one considers the danger
to the photographer of being in such proximity to the charge of an animal
weighing 20-30 tons. The photo was clearly taken with a fisheye lens,
meaning the photographer could not have been more than perhaps three
meters away, and yet managed to maintain composure, keep the camera
level, and take a photo when in danger of imminent destruction!"

“A nice reminder that even the ocean’s most beautiful and extravagant
creatures must daily engage in the business of eating and being eaten."

“These tiny cephalopods are hard enough to find and photograph – let
alone capture in a moment of intimacy."
